Welcome to our Spring Diary 2023
Having come through the exceptionally cold frosts of winter, and with spring now firmly upon us, it has been lovely to welcome our first group of guests for our exclusive weekend bookings to Howtown Hotel.
As you are probably aware, we are now not taking individual reservations, but we are welcoming groups of up to 14 guests to take advantage of the exclusive use of the whole Hotel, enabling all to enjoy the complete Howtown Hotel experience. Fully catered for by our own chef Colin Akrigg, it is lovely to see parties of guests creating special memories of their weekend together, whilst continuing to enjoy the warmth, comfort and high standards for which Howtown is unrivalled.
Menus discussed in advance are created by Colin in the Howtown kitchen and served by our experienced staff in the Dining Room, the Hotel bar is open for exclusive use with a fully stocked wine cellar, and the hotel becomes a 'home from home' for the weekend. We very much appreciate that this does not suit all our guests and are sorry we are not able to continue to take individual bookings.
Howtown Hotel Tearoom re-opened as usual on the 4th April for the Season. The home-made bread and soup are as inviting as ever, making a perfect lunch especially when followed by a cake of your choice from the burgeoning cake counter. Diane’s sausage rolls and selection of scones are back on the menu by popular demand.
Howtown Hotel Self-catering Cottages remain open as usual. For availability, please call 017684 86514 or email [email protected] Low Gale continues to be booked on-line at www.howtowncottages.co.uk.
If you are booked to stay in the Howtown Cottages and would like a taste of Howtown whilst dining at home, Colin has created a selection of takeaway dishes prepared in the Howtown kitchen ready for heating up to be served at your leisure. Menus are available in each of the cottages and dishes can be ordered from the Hotel or the Tearoom.
The severe frosts of the winter resulted in burst pipes on more than one occasion. Turning this into a positive we re-scheduled our winter work programme and took the opportunity to create a lovely new kitchen-dining room for Low Gale and provide two more en-suite bedrooms for the Hotel, whilst still managing to complete the routine refurbishment that takes place each winter.
Spring has been dryer than normal with Ullswater sitting quite low but generally our weather has been unpredictable. Howtown Hotel gardens and grounds are looking splendid with the promise of buds which are almost open and the early flowering bulbs showing a variety of colour. We now await the sunshine to persuade our herbaceous plants to burst into bloom – this fast-growing foliage will soon provide the lush borders for which the gardens are famed.
For those of you not able to visit us this year we will continue to post photos of Howtown, the Gardens and surrounding valleys to keep you in touch, hoping that you take pleasure in our news from the ‘quiet side’ of the lake
