Our Autumn diary 2019 is a tribute to Eddie Kay. A true friend to all at Howtown and a man who embraced life here in the valley. It was Eddie who first penned the diary pages of our website back in 2013 and his entries have entertained and informed many of our visitors over the subsequent years. His love of the area is reflected in his poem ‘Martindale’, published in 1997
MARTINDALE
A dusty road in and overcrowded country
a place of solace to those who visit
a haven to sitters, walkers and standers
who in its peaceful vastness readily submit
A goal to the city folk
whose nine to five stresses
and rush hour migraines
beg for its tender caresses
In the shadow of mighty Ullswater
A perfect beauty spot, with or without the pout
An impossibility oozing out of the possible
the in place to be out
From beyond the cattle grid
Everything will all join together
Depending on the mood, or the person
But always dependent on the weather
